What Is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting areas of the head and trunk where sebaceous glands are most prominent. Lipophilic yeasts of the Malassezia genus, as well as genetic, environmental and general health factors, contribute to this disorder. SD is typically not very prominent during the childhood years, but it frequently develops in the early teens sat the onset of puberty. Therafter, it can occur at any time throughout adult life. Seborrheic dermatitis is the overproduction of skin cells and the skin's oil (sebum). It causes red, flaky, slightly itchy skin in areas that have many oil-producing glands such as on an adult's scalp, face chest and back.

Seborrheic dermatitis is mostly a cosmetic problem, but it is not always easily treated. It may go away without care, but tends to come back. Seborrheic dermatitis is known as an inherited problem with the scalp. This is one of the reasons why it can’t be prevented. The condition often recurs, requiring re-treatment over time. Seborrheic Dermatitis is common in people with oily skin or hair, and may be seen with acne or psoriasis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is also seen more frequently and extensively when the immune system becomes weakened. It is not in any way related to skin cancer or other skin diseases. Seborrheic dermatitis is often thought of as a severe case of dandruff accompanied at times by an odor, which is caused by the buildup of bacteria on the scalp.

Seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious, caused by poor hygiene, an allergic reaction, or dangerous to the patient. The biggest health issue associated with this oily skin condition is skin damage and/or open wounds caused by scratching.
